Giving Tuesday: Afghan Refugee Students Need Your Help

After School Program for K-12 Students

Dear Friends,

As we know, the newly arrived Afghan refugees helped Americans in Afghanistan. Now, it is our turn to help them--and we can do just that by empowering them through education and jobs to be more successful, productive members of our community. Our highest priority is the success of the K-12 refugee students.

Some background: Since August of 2021, the Noor Islamic and Cultural Community Center (NICCC) in Concord has been serving over 600 newly arrived Afghan refugees in the community. Staffed almost totally by volunteers, we have been providing food, clothing, blankets, furnishings, and money, helping to obtain housing and jobs, and assisting with everything from getting public benefits to navigating the DMV and getting children enrolled in school. We have also been providing crisis counseling and cultural orientation, translation services, starting an After School program for K-12 students, and more.

A lot has been done and NOW with your help, we can do more. We have plans for programs to provide education and job services to adults, mental health counseling, and cultural orientation. However, we first need to secure funding to continue helping the K-12 students academically.

The Need: The After-School Program currently serves 25 refugee students on Saturdays with teaching and tutoring in English and Math, as well as transportation and food. With your help, we can keep the program running, expand it to serve more students, and add another day of the week for tutoring via Zoom and with Chrome books.

We need $90,000.00 for the After School Program for January 2023-December 2023.

Thank you for whatever you can contribute. No amount is too small. All donations are tax-deductible and are greatly appreciated.

5 Pillars of Islam

Shahadah/Faith

Every Muslim is supposed to believe that there is only one God and His messenger was Prophet Muhammad.

Salah/Prayer

It is the ritual of praying to Allah five times a day facing Makkah. A Muslim must perform the ritual after dark, noon, sunset, mid-afternoon and at dawn.

Roza/Fasting

Roza or fasting helps Muslims to develop a sense of self-discipline and allows them to identify with the poor and the needy.

Zakat/Alms

This is an obligatory giving of alms, to the less fortunate in your community of believers.

Hajj/Pilgrimage

It is a pilgrimage to Makkah and is the fifth pillar of Islam. It strips away all that relates to societal standards, wealth, and pride.
